Engaging students at School

Recently, most of my work has centered around partnering with Walton Arts Center for the WAC/Trike SmART Residency program.  We present arts integrated workshops in two Springdale Elementary Schools: Bayyari and Sonora.  We have consistent contact with the 2nd & 3rd grade classrooms throughout the school year.  Right now, our workshop is around the performance ‘The Odyssey Experience.’ Students are encouraged to create tableaus (frozen pictures) to tell the story of Odysseus and his crew.  Some of the most rewarding moments in these workshops happen when I can see students making connections between the performance and what they are learning in their classroom.

We create tableaus to retell the stories of Odysseus.  We also make deeper connections by using tableaus to tell stories of Odysseus that were not discussed during the play.  We are almost half-way through our year-long residency with these two amazing schools and I cannot wait to see what we are able to create with these students during the rest of the school year.
