Dramatic Book Club
What is it?
Dramatic Book Club is a unique pre-K literacy and creative drama program. It occurs within pre-schools and public libraries to encourage active reading and runs from September 2011 through May 2012. The 30-minute workshop introduces preschoolers not only to a story but also ways to explore the world of the story by becoming the characters, finding solutions to problems, and predicting outcomes. Through this process, participants build a strong vocabulary and forge deep connections to the text and the other participants. A Dramatic Book Club teaching artist engages the students by telling the story using a variety of visual performance such as acting, movement, puppetry, and prop play.
How does it work?
Centering on a book or story as well as a Pre-K skill and/or concept, our teaching artist(s) revisit these concepts and introduce them in a new way using performance and music. Teachers and parents actively participate in the workshop along with the students as they bring to life the world of the story.
After the Dramatic Book Club workshop, Trike Theatre leaves behind any and all props at a story station so that the students may be able to continue playing in the story, while continuously finding new approaches to the original story.
Also, at the end of each workshop, the teaching artist(s) will distribute a Bilingual (Spanish and English) Post-Workshop Play Card with information about the workshop's objectives and follow up creative activities to use at home.
